Monday’s Potpourri

Hello Monday!

As we close out August today, it’s time for another potpourri edition from the past weekend! When there are several stories out there that I want to comment about, I combine them into a “potpourri” column.

Today’s topics include:

  • Griz/Bison Football
  • Montana Weather
  • Dome Lights
  • Video Music Awards
  • Little League World Series

Montana/North Dakota State Football:

It was sweet to see the Montana Grizzlies beat the North Dakota State Bison on Saturday. The Bison were coming off another National Championship year and the Griz were bringing in a new head coach.

We found out that new Griz head coach Bob Stitt is a bit of a gambler – he likes to go for it on fourth down (in his own territory). I predict his style will go over well with fans until he loses a game or two.

Montana Weather:

Sometimes the local TV weather folks (or meteorologists) tick me off. Yes, I’m at the age where I occasionally talk to the television.

The local TV meteorologists informed me over the weekend that in Great Falls the average last 90° high temperature day is September 3rd. Then, I think one of them informed me that the average date for the first frost is around September 22.

Do you really need to rain on our parade like that?

Dome Lights:

The Great Falls Tribune’s Phil Drake will be writing a weekly column called “Dome Lights” for the Trib. It will be published each Sunday. The first column can be read HERE.

I enjoy Drake’s writing style and I like his stories – so you should give it a read. He even mentioned that he likes Aaron Flint’s “Voices of Montana” radio program. Drake wrote, “I can’t say I always agree with Aaron, but he does buy the beer when he’s in town.”

I guess I’ll have to be nicer to Flint…

Video Music Awards:

I watched part of MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA) Sunday night because I am pretty hip. Miley Cyrus was the host. I think I liked her better as Hannah Montana.

USA Today has “5 things you missed at the VMAs” in case you did not watch. As normal, Taylor Swift was a winner and gracious.

I think I’m getting older…

Little League World Series:

I watched the Little League World Series on Sunday. The USA team from Pennsylvania opened up an 8 run lead early in the game, but ended up losing to Japan 18-11. You can read a recap HERE.

The 18-11 score was probably more like the score of many Little League games that are played around the world.

Have a great week!
